FAQs

Are you a direct pay provider for scholarship programs?

Freedom Academy is not a direct pay provider for the Step Up for Student PEP or UA Scholarships. We are able to provide receipts, teacher certification documentation, and program details to families that can be submitted for reimbursement. Freedom Academy cannot guarantee reimbursement as those decisions are made by the Step Up for Students Program.

How do I register as a homeschooler in Florida?

Families have choices about how to register as homeschooler in the state of Florida. It is up to each family to research and choose the option that is the best fit for your family. It’s also important you research on your own to be sure you have the most current information. Please make sure that you fully understand the requirements and due dates for each.

  • File a one time notice of intent with Brevard Public Schools indicating your desire to homeschool. This can be done at any time during the year and should be submitted within 30 days of beginning your child’s homeschool program. Kindergarteners do not need to register until they are 6 years old.

Once completed you can choose curriculum, tutoring programs, online options, etc. for your child’s education.

Each year you will submit an Annual Evaluation Form signed by a certified teacher and submit the form to Brevard Public Schools by your child’s annual due date, which falls in the same month you submitted your notice of intent. Ex. You submitted your notice of intent in August. Your Annual Evaluation will be due the following August.

  • Apply for Step Up for Student scholarship. Once awarded, you will terminate your child’s public school, private school, umbrella school, or Brevard Public Schools homeschool status and will be recognized as a homeschooler under the Step Up for Students program.

The funding year is from July 1 of the current year through June 30 of the following year.

Once awarded you can choose curriculum, tutoring programs, online options, etc. for your child’s education. You will keep receipts and submit for reimbursement on your child’s Step Up For Students dashboard. Refer to the scholarship Purchasing Guide and Handbook for directions and reimbursement requirements.

At the end of the year, your child will be required to complete a standardized assessment and you will submit those scores as directed by the Step Up for Students scholarship program. Refer to Step Up for Students for approved assessments and directions for submitting scores.

  • Register with an umbrella school. An umbrella school is a group that acts like a private school for homeschoolers. Each one has their own requirements and fees. A popular umbrella school is Florida Unschoolers. It is up to each family to research and meet the requirements of the umbrella school they choose.

Do you have any field trips?

Throughout the year there are field trip opportunities. Our goal is to have 3-4 field trips per year. Field trips are optional and fun!

Occasionally we partner with local community resources to provide enrichment during our regular co-op day. These hands-on educational opportunities bring topics we are studying to life!
